Born in Tennessee and raised in Jacinto, Miss., John Withers was regimental quartermaster and acting adjutant, post adjutant, commissary and subsistence officer in the U.S. Army, holding posts in the Pacific Northwest, San Antonio, Tex., and Washington, D.C. He married Anita Dwyer, a San Antonio native, in 1859.
